The Operating system/System Software is the most important type of system software in a computer system. Without an operating system, a user cannot run an application program on their computer unless the application program is booting. System software is used directly by users and other system software works in the background. System software can allow users to interact directly with hardware functionality.

Operating System:

The Operating System (OS) works as a host for application programs that are worked on the machine. As a host, one of the objectives of running system software program is to take care of the information of the procedure of the equipment. An operating system (OS) is a type of system software that manages computer’s hardware and software resources. It provides common services for computer programs.

Examples of  Operating Systems:- 

• Android, iOS, Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

System control programs controls the execution of programs, manage the storage & processing resources of the computer & perform other management & monitoring function. Therefor  The most important of  programs is the operating system.

Operating System features:−

• An operating system is a program that acts as an interface between the software and the computer hardware.
• It is an integrated set of specialized programs used to manage overall resources and operations of the computer.
• It is a specialized software that controls and monitors the execution of all other programs that reside in the computer, including application programs and other system software.

RAM: 

Random Access Memory is the physical hardware inside a computer that temporarily stores data, serving as the computer's "working"memory. Additional RAM allows a computer to work with more information at the same time, which usually has a dramatic effect on total system performance.

                                                          Ram can be read and written quickly in any order. Normally, the random access memory is in the form of computer chips.

Types of RAM:

Over the evolution of the computer there have been different variations of RAM. Some of the more common examples are DIMM, RIMM, SIMM, SO-DIMM, and SOO-RIMM. 

History of RAM:

• The second widely used form of RAM was magnetic-core memory, invented in 1947. Frederick Viehe is credited with much of the work, having filed for several patents relating to the design.

NOTE:

The RAM slots are adjacent to the CPU socket. Look for the big heat sink at the top of the motherboard, and you'll see either two or four memory slots next to it. These are the motherboard slots you insert your RAM into. Before you can install the new memory you've purchased, you have to remove the old kit.

Modern computers have the ability to follow generalized sets of operations, called programs. These programs enable computers to perform an extremely wide range of tasks.
Computers are used as control systems for a wide variety of industrial and consumer devices. This includes simple special purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls, factory devices such as industrial robots and computer-aided design, and also general purpose devices like personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones.
Early computers were only conceived as calculating devices. Since ancient times, simple manual devices like the abacus aided people in doing calculations. Early in the Industrial Revolution, some mechanical devices were built to automate long tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. More sophisticated electrical machines did specialized analog calculations in the early 20th century. The first digital electronic calculating machines were developed during World War II. The speed, power, and versatility of computers have been increasing dramatically ever since then.
Conventionally, a modern computer consists of at least one processing element, typically a central processing unit (CPU), and some form of memory. The processing element carries out arithmetic and logical operations, and a sequencing and control unit can change the order of operations in response to stored information. Peripheral devices include input devices (keyboards, mice, joystick, etc.), output devices (monitor screens, printers, etc.), and input/output devices that perform both functions (e.g., the 2000s-era touchscreen). Peripheral devices allow information to be retrieved from an external source and they enable the result of operations to be saved and retrieved.
